OpenAI buys Orchestra Bio to expand Rosalind AI for pharma research
OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old AI biotech software startup, according to an announcement on OpenAI’s website. The deal’s terms were not disclosed, but Orchestra Bio had reportedly raised about $20 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz and 8VC. Orchestra develops AI agents that help biotech firms manage drug discovery operations, from finance tracking to clinical trial scheduling.
OpenAI will integrate Orchestra’s team and technology into its Rosalind AI model and Rosalind Workbench tool, which support life sciences research and experiment planning. OpenAI claims it already serves major clients such as Moderna and Novo Nordisk with Rosalind.
This acquisition reflects a trend where major AI labs, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are moving deeper into industry-specific software, particularly for sectors like pharma. For biotech and pharma executives, the deal signals rising competition from AI platforms and a shift in how drug discovery and operational processes may be run.
Leaders should monitor how quickly these AI tools are adopted by rivals and consider their own AI partnerships or investments to avoid being left behind.
