Wikipedia has announced new partnerships with major AI companies like Amazon, Meta, Perplexity, Microsoft, and France’s Mistral AI to mark its 25th anniversary. The Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, hopes these agreements will help finance the site’s infrastructure costs amidst rising AI demand. Since AI firms heavily use Wikipedia’s vast, free content for training—at times stressing the site’s servers—the foundation encourages fair compensation from these companies. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales expressed support for AI training on the platform due to its human-curated information, and sees opportunities for AI to enhance Wikipedia’s search and editorial tools without replacing human editors. Despite challenges from critics and shifts in online behavior, Wikipedia remains a vital open knowledge resource, supported primarily by individual donors.
