Waymo, a leader in autonomous ride-hailing, plans to initiate testing of its self-driving taxis in London streets soon, with safety drivers present, as it pursues local government approvals. The company aims to establish a foundation for its London service over the coming months and engage with regulatory bodies to launch its commercial robotaxi operations. Already active in multiple U.S. cities and currently expanding testing partnerships in Japan, Waymo must comply with new UK safety regulations requiring autonomous vehicles to match the safety of skilled human drivers. It will also participate in a 2026 pilot program for small-scale autonomous taxi and bus services and adhere to Transport for London’s licensing rules.
