Many Gen Z Americans see owning a home as a dream but feel discouraged due to housing affordability issues. According to a Realtor.com survey of 1,000 Gen Z adults, 82% believe buying a home is harder for their generation than older ones, with 16% ranking housing affordability among their top concerns. Factors like limited housing inventory, high home prices, and elevated mortgage rates have largely locked this generation out of the market. Despite these hurdles, nearly one-third of Gen Z is actively saving for a down payment, showing optimism and prioritization of homeownership. They prefer dependable ways to grow wealth and are willing to make sacrifices, such as living with parents or roommates, to afford homes. However, easing the housing crisis will require market solutions like constructing more starter and multifamily homes. Additionally, a future decrease in mortgage rates below 6% could stimulate housing inventory and affordability, unlocking more opportunities for younger buyers.
