Google is preparing to replace Google Assistant with Gemini on Android devices, introducing an update that enhances privacy while allowing more device control. Starting July 7th, Gemini users can grant the AI assistant permission to control Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and other utilities regardless of Gemini Apps Activity being on or off. Disabling Gemini Apps Activity will stop conversation data from being used for AI training and product improvement while still enabling Gemini to perform tasks such as sending messages, making calls, and setting timers. This update aims to offer seamless personal assistant functionality without compromising user data privacy, with conversations saved only for up to 72 hours for security reasons. The change marks a step toward Gemini fully replacing Google Assistant on Android later this year.
