YouTube Implements AI to Identify and Restrict Accounts of Minors

YouTube is introducing AI-powered age estimation technology to identify users under 18. Starting August 13th in the US, the platform will use machine learning to estimate users’ ages based on activity and account age, automatically applying restrictions for underage users. These protections include blocking age-restricted videos, using non-personalized ads, sending ‘take a break’ notifications, limiting sensitive topic recommendations, and enabling privacy reminders when uploading videos or commenting. Users will be notified if identified as underage and can verify their age through government ID, selfies, or credit card. This update aligns with global efforts to enhance child safety online and may impact content creators by shifting audience demographics and reducing personalized ad revenue. YouTube plans to monitor the update before expanding it internationally.
