Yann LeCun, a leading figure in artificial intelligence and former chief AI scientist at Meta, has secured more than $1 billion in funding to launch Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), a company dedicated to developing AI systems that go beyond large language models. Unlike current transformer-based AI, which primarily processes language, AMI aims to create AI with persistent memory, reasoning capabilities, and a robust understanding of the physical world through spatial data modeling. This new approach aspires to build AI systems that can perform complex, high-value tasks with a human-like understanding of reality. Prominent investors including Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, and Bezos Expeditions are backing the venture, alongside technology pioneers like Eric Schmidt and Tim Berners-Lee. LeCun’s efforts highlight a shift in AI research from chatbots to agents capable of orchestrating complex workflows, pointing toward a future where AI systems are more integrated and functional in real-world tasks.
