OpenAI’s acquisition of Windsurf has been called off. Instead, Google will hire Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, cofounder Douglas Chen, and several R&D employees to join the Google DeepMind team. These personnel will focus on agentic coding projects, primarily involving Google’s Gemini initiative. Windsurf remains independent, with Google obtaining only a non-exclusive license to some of Windsurf’s technology. Jeff Wang takes the helm as interim CEO, with Graham Moreno becoming the new VP of global sales.
