This article is the first in a three-part series examining venture capital investment trends for Black-founded startups in 2026, based on data from Crunchbase’s Diversity Spotlight. Despite an overall rise in startup funding, Black-owned ventures received only about $942 million in 2025, representing a mere 0.32% of total U.S. venture capital funding, a significant drop from previous years. Early 2026 shows some improvement with $643 million raised, largely propelled by a substantial $350 million Series E round by AI chip company SambaNova. However, this funding volume is still minimal compared to the $252 billion raised by U.S. startups this year. The report highlights the continued importance of relationships and networking for Black founders in an AI-driven funding environment and stresses the need for structural changes in venture capital to better support underrepresented entrepreneurs. The piece also discusses notable funding rounds and includes insights from industry experts on the challenges and opportunities faced by Black founders today.
