Twitter/X is addressing a surplus of inactive usernames following a user exodus after Elon Musk’s acquisition by launching a “handle marketplace.” This new marketplace allows Premium+ or Premium Business subscribers to buy abandoned and inactive usernames, with prices for rare names ranging from $2,500 to over a million dollars. Priority usernames require an active subscription to retain, while rare usernames sold at fixed prices can be kept even if the subscription is canceled. Some rare handles will also be distributed via public drops based on user engagement without subscription requirements. This initiative aims to boost revenue and establish a new standard for social media handles. Twitter/X’s handle marketplace reflects broader trends seen in other tech companies managing inactive accounts, like Google’s recent deletion of inactive accounts.
