Fortnite was removed from the iOS App Store for almost five years following a dispute in 2020 when Epic introduced an in-app payment system breaching Apple’s rules. Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, anticipated a quicker resolution, hoping for a temporary injunction that would limit the downtime to a few weeks. However, legal proceedings extended the ban until Fortnite’s recent return to the US App Store in May, where it has since become the top free game, garnering around 10 million downloads. Sweeney and EVP Saxs Persson noted that the game’s audience includes players who switch between high-end devices like TVs and mobile phones for gaming convenience and availability.
