Thrive Holdings buys ADT for $15.3 billion to expand AI in home security

Thrive Holdings, the holding company spun out from Thrive Capital and backed by OpenAI, has acquired home security firm ADT for $10 per share, or about $7.6 billion in equity, with a total enterprise value of $15.3 billion. The deal aims to make ADT the core of Thrive’s smart home security business, according to the companies.

OpenAI, as a partner and investor, will provide AI models, technology, and engineers to Thrive’s portfolio, which now includes more than 75 companies. While no new products were announced, Thrive and ADT plan to invest in and release new AI-powered security offerings.

The move comes as competition in AI-driven home security intensifies. Apple recently launched smart home security products with LG and Schneider Electric, and Amazon has updated its AI-powered cameras. ADT already works with Apple and Google, and these partnerships are expected to continue.

For insurers and tech firms, the integration of AI into physical security could affect risk models, claims, and product offerings. The sector may see further consolidation or new partnerships as AI capabilities expand.
