Tesla’s robotaxi rides in San Francisco are currently operating with humans at the wheel. The service, newly launched in San Francisco and earlier in Austin, Texas, includes a safety monitor or human driver as per California regulations. California requires three permits for commercial robotaxi services, but Tesla has only obtained one, allowing operations with a human driver. Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, is the only company with full permits for fully driverless commercial rides in San Francisco. Despite this, Tesla CEO Elon Musk plans to expand robotaxi services to other states including Florida, Nevada, and Arizona, aiming for fully autonomous rides in the future.
