Tesla argues it is not liable since the driver was inattentive and overrode the system, while plaintiffs claim Autopilot failed to warn of the impending crash and neglected automatic emergency braking. The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, could expose Tesla to punitive damages if a jury finds reckless disregard for human life, a significant risk amid Musk’s controversial leadership and past regulatory investigations.
