Japanese technology giant SoftBank Group Corp. announced it sold its stake in Nvidia for $5.8 billion in October, reflecting a strategic shift toward investing in artificial intelligence, particularly OpenAI. The company’s profit nearly tripled in the first half of the fiscal year, reaching about $13 billion (2.5 trillion yen), with sales increasing 7.7% year-on-year to $24 billion (3.7 trillion yen). SoftBank’s chairman Masayoshi Son is pivoting the company’s focus toward AI projects, including a major $500 billion initiative called Stargate alongside OpenAI, Oracle, and other partners. Nvidia, valued recently at $5 trillion, plans significant investments in AI infrastructure with OpenAI, strengthening its computing capabilities. Despite selling its Nvidia stake, SoftBank maintains strong ties through its investments in AI-related companies like Arm Holdings and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. SoftBank’s stock has nearly doubled in the past year, while Nvidia’s shares experienced recent volatility. Overall, the move underlines SoftBank’s commitment to AI-driven growth strategies.
