Patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) used smart glasses linked to a tiny retinal implant to regain partial central vision. The implant, a 2×2 mm photovoltaic device, was placed under the retina and worked by receiving images from glasses equipped with a camera, which transmitted them via near infrared light to the implant. This technology stimulated the optic nerve electrically, simulating normal retinal function. In a clinical trial of 38 patients, 80% experienced improved vision after one year, enabling activities like reading and puzzle-solving, though vision remained blurry and monochromatic. The retinal implant technology, originally developed by Pixium Vision and later acquired by Science Corporation—founded by Neuralink cofounder Max Hodak—represents a significant advancement in vision restoration for AMD patients.
