Ring has resumed its policy of permitting police to request video footage from users through a new partnership with Axon, a law enforcement technology company. This partnership integrates Ring footage requests into Axon’s digital evidence management system, allowing users to choose whether to share their video securely. The move reverses Ring’s previous decision to limit police requests to emergency situations only. The integration aims to enhance neighborhood safety by facilitating cooperation between residents and law enforcement while maintaining user privacy. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff emphasized that the collaboration supports Ring’s mission to keep neighborhoods safer. The company has faced criticism in the past over privacy concerns and agreed to a $5.8 million settlement with the FTC for camera security issues. As of 2021, Ring partnered with over 2,000 police and fire departments across the US.
