The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Privacy Rights Clearinghouse (PRC) have urged states to investigate why hundreds of data brokers have not registered with state consumer protection agencies in accordance with laws. An analysis across California, Texas, Oregon, and Vermont found many brokers failed to register in all four states, hindering consumer transparency and opt-out options. Data brokers collect and sell extensive personal information, raising privacy concerns. State laws require registration and data disclosure, but discrepancies suggest some brokers may be violating regulations or exploiting definitional differences. EFF and PRC call for investigations to enforce compliance and strengthen privacy protections as federal attempts falter.
