Opera has filed a competition complaint in Brazil accusing Microsoft of using manipulative and anti-competitive tactics to push users toward its Edge browser. Microsoft allegedly frustrates users’ attempts to download alternative browsers by ignoring default browser settings in apps like Outlook and Teams, and through intrusive banners on Edge search. Opera claims Microsoft also forces OEMs to preload Edge and restricts alternative browser downloads, practices Opera wants stopped. The complaint follows Opera’s previous challenges to Microsoft in the EU regarding Edge’s dominance on Windows devices. Opera seeks remedies including allowing manufacturers to preload other browsers, stopping blocking of alternative browsers, and ending ‘dark patterns’ that favor Edge. This is part of Opera’s global effort to promote free consumer choice in browsers.
