OpenAI has introduced a new Study Mode in ChatGPT designed to facilitate deeper learning by guiding users through problems step-by-step instead of just providing direct answers. Available immediately to Free, Plus, Pro, Team, and soon ChatGPT Edu users, this mode employs interactive prompts that integrate Socratic questioning, hints, and self-reflection to promote understanding. Study Mode organizes explanations into clear sections, connects related topics, and personalizes lessons using assessments of previous interactions. Additionally, it offers quizzes to reinforce learning. This feature aims to encourage educational use of ChatGPT amidst rising AI competition, such as Anthropic’s Learning Mode for Claude. While Study Mode is optional and users can disable it, OpenAI plans enhancements including better visuals, goal tracking, and personalization. The system instructions fueling Study Mode were co-developed with educators and experts to adapt based on real student feedback, even if it leads to occasional inconsistencies. Concurrently, other AI tools like Google’s new Search AI features and NotebookLM’s video overview are expanding in ways that support student productivity and learning.
