OpenAI has updated ChatGPT’s default model to GPT-5.5 Instant, improving accuracy and smartness over the previous 5.3 version. A key new feature is memory sources, which reveal some of the past chats or files the model used to generate responses, offering partial insight into how answers are formed. Users can also control and delete these memory references to keep information current. However, this feature does not show the full context behind responses, signaling the rise of a secondary, incomplete memory log that could cause inconsistencies with enterprise auditing systems. Enterprises using ChatGPT should carefully manage and audit memory logs to avoid conflicts between model-reported context and existing retrieval records. Although GPT-5.5 Instant reduces hallucinations and improves performance on complex queries, its memory observability is a work in progress and does not yet provide full transparency.
