Netflix employed generative AI to create a visual effects scene in its original sci-fi series The Eternaut, marking a first for the streamer. According to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, the AI-generated sequence of a building collapse in Buenos Aires was completed ten times faster than traditional VFX methods and significantly reduced production costs, making it feasible within the show’s budget. Sarandos emphasized that AI offers a unique opportunity to enhance film and series production quality and efficiency. Additionally, Netflix has introduced AI-powered features such as a conversational search tool on mobile and AI-driven ad integrations that blend ads with show content, exemplified by contextual backgrounds like Stranger Things-themed ads.
