Microsoft has unveiled Mico, a new AI character designed to give its Copilot virtual assistant a friendly and expressive face. Mico, which looks like a colorful floating blob or flame, interacts with users on laptops and phones in the U.S., changing expressions and colors based on context. This represents Microsoft’s effort to humanize AI without overwhelming users or fostering dependence, contrasting with the persistence issues of the old Clippy assistant. Microsoft aims for Mico to be genuinely helpful without encouraging excessive engagement or confirming user biases. Copilot now also allows group chat invitations and includes features to support educational settings, acting as a Socratic tutor for students. This development comes amid growing concerns and regulatory scrutiny about AI companions’ impact on youth mental health, with Microsoft adopting a cautious approach compared to others in the industry.
