Meta has entered a new agreement with XGS Energy to support geothermal energy projects in New Mexico, aiming to add 150 megawatts of carbon-free electricity to the local power grid. XGS Energy develops advanced geothermal technologies that enable energy extraction in areas previously unsuitable for geothermal power, using a closed-loop water system ideal for drought-prone regions like New Mexico. This deal supports Meta’s growing electricity needs driven by AI development at its Los Lunas data center and aligns with the company’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2030. Meta previously partnered with Sage Geosystems on similar geothermal initiatives and is also exploring other clean energy sources, including nuclear. The XGS Energy project is set to be operational by 2030 and will help mitigate the environmental impact of Meta’s expanding data infrastructure.
