LinkedIn is currently facing two class-action lawsuits in California amid claims that it covertly scans users’ browser extensions without transparent notification. The lawsuits highlight that LinkedIn’s software inspects Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers, potentially exposing private details about user preferences and activities. This issue gained attention following Fairlinked’s “BrowserGate” investigation, which revealed LinkedIn’s use of hidden scripts to detect thousands of extensions. While LinkedIn admits to scanning, it asserts this is aimed at tools used for data scraping and is covered under its privacy policy. The suits contend that the disclosures are insufficient and infringe on privacy laws, sparking wider concerns about transparency and data collection at the browser level.
