Over the past decade, AI has revolutionized recruitment and employee evaluations, shifting from human judgment to algorithmic assessment. Today, about 70% of knowledge workers use AI at work, with many organizations integrating it into performance reviews. While AI has the potential to make feedback more objective and timely by analyzing real behaviors and interactions, concerns arise over privacy, surveillance, and trust erosion if misused. Four outcomes emerge: AI benefiting both company and employees through fair coaching; benefiting company but harming employees via surveillance; employees gaming the system; or neither party benefiting due to mistrust and disengagement. To harness AI constructively, companies must ensure transparency, validation, human oversight, and a focus on morale alongside productivity. Ultimately, blending AI insights with human judgment preserves the art of meaningful performance appraisals that support growth and organizational success.
