Fidji Simo, CEO of Instacart Inc., will assume a new executive role at OpenAI starting August 18th, where she will lead the applications division responsible for scaling and growing AI use cases. Reporting directly to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Simo will oversee about one-third of the company with a focus on product and growth, distinct from Altman’s focus on research and compute. Simo expressed enthusiasm for AI-driven advancements in healthcare, career coaching, creative expression, and personalized tutoring, while emphasizing the importance of AI empowering all rather than concentrating power among a few. She joined OpenAI’s board in March 2024 and will continue as Instacart’s CEO until early August earnings are reported, after which she will transition fully to OpenAI.
