Advancements in artificial intelligence are transforming many areas of society, including education. While AI-powered educational technology has grown rapidly, only some tools genuinely support student learning. Educational leaders face the challenge of adopting AI responsibly and effectively. The Advanced Education Research and Development Fund partnered with educational organizations to promote research-driven, collaborative development of AI tools that meet educators’ and students’ real needs. Key insights include the importance of aligning AI with existing instructional goals, prioritizing clear use cases over novelty, and ensuring trust through co-designed frameworks involving educators and families. Guardrails such as coherence with teaching priorities, equity, safety, privacy, and transparency are essential for AI to support rather than hinder learning. Leaders express hope as conversations about evidence-based AI adoption advance and districts become more deliberate in integrating AI in ways that enhance rather than disrupt education.
