Google has temporarily paused the rollout of its AI-powered “Ask Photos” feature in Google Photos due to issues with latency, quality, and user experience. The feature, powered by a specialized version of Google’s Gemini AI models, allows users to query their Photos app with natural language questions. Jamie Aspinall, a product manager for Google Photos, stated that the feature is currently not meeting expectations and the rollout has been paused at a very small scale while improvements are made. A better version is expected in about two weeks that will restore speed and search accuracy. Meanwhile, Google has enhanced keyword search in Photos to allow exact text matches and visual matches for queries. This comes after previous instances where Google paused AI features due to performance and accuracy issues, reflecting the challenges in developing reliable AI tools.
