Google has introduced WeatherNext 2, its latest AI-based weather prediction model, now embedded in products such as Search, Gemini, Maps, and Pixel phones. This new model offers forecasts that are eight times faster and more accurate, predicting key variables like temperature and wind with 99.9% precision. Unlike traditional physics-based models that simulate atmospheric processes and require supercomputers, WeatherNext 2 uses a Functional Generative Network to efficiently produce hundreds of forecast scenarios in under a minute with the help of Google’s TPU chips. Capable of forecasting up to 15 days ahead with hourly updates, this advancement supports both consumer needs and enterprise customers in sectors like energy, agriculture, and transportation. Google is also providing early access for customized modeling and making data available through Google Earth Engine and BigQuery, positioning itself competitively alongside other innovators such as Nvidia and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
