At an AI summit in New York, Google’s VP of government affairs, Markham Erickson, defended the use of AI-generated summaries in search results. In response to a lawsuit from Penske Media Corporation, owner of Rolling Stone, over Google’s AI Overviews, Erickson highlighted changing user preferences. He noted that users are shifting from traditional factual answers and the classic ’10 blue links’ to AI-provided contextual summaries appearing atop search results. Google aims to maintain a balanced ecosystem that includes both AI summaries and traditional search links, ensuring valuable content remains accessible and publishers are supported. Erickson emphasized their commitment to driving users back to online content while adapting to the evolving search landscape.
