Google has asserted that its AI-driven search features are not harming web traffic, despite reports to the contrary. In a recent blog, Google Search head Liz Reid noted that click volumes have remained fairly stable compared to last year, though the impact varies across website types. Reid’s statements challenge findings from a Pew Research report indicating users are less likely to click links when AI summaries appear at the top of search results. While some media outlets report traffic drops due to AI and algorithm changes, Google emphasizes increased clicks for sites with forums, videos, and unique content. Reid also highlights that users who click through AI-generated citations often spend more time engaging with the content. The company continues to roll out AI features publicly and is experimenting with AI-curated search result pages, signaling ongoing transformation in search technology.
