In the Finnish municipality of Pornainen, a revolutionary sand battery the size of a house has been activated by startup Polar Night Energy. This innovative energy storage system uses sand to store excess renewable energy as heat. It will provide heating to the town’s 5,000 residents, replacing the need for natural gas and oil in the local heating network.
