Databricks Unveils Breakthroughs to Eliminate Data Pipeline Delays for AI Agents

For decades, managing operational and analytical databases without introducing latency has been a persistent challenge for data professionals. The emergence of AI agents, which require continuous reasoning and real-time access to live data, has intensified this problem by making traditional data pipelines untenable. At the recent Data + AI Summit, Databricks announced two innovative solutions designed to simplify this infrastructure. Lakehouse//RT offers millisecond query latency directly on Delta and Iceberg tables, removing the need for separate real-time serving layers. LTAP (Lake Transactional/Analytical Processing) enables Postgres-native transactional data storage in open formats from the moment of write, eliminating longstanding ETL pipelines between operational and analytical systems.

Reynold Xin, Databricks co-founder, described this streamlined approach as a “holy grail for agents,” emphasizing that a simpler data stack enables faster, more efficient AI applications. Unlike the Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP) attempts by other vendors, Databricks’ LTAP focuses on unifying storage rather than engine convergence, using a caching layer to deliver low latency and efficient data compression.

Lakehouse//RT achieves sub-100ms response times at scale without duplicating data or complicating governance, while operating entirely within Unity Catalog’s framework. Industry analysts note the significance of this agent-focused architecture and open data formats, which could mark a shift away from specialized and fragmented serving systems toward unified, streamlined data infrastructure. Enterprises relying on separate operational databases, real-time tiers, and analytical lakehouses face rising operational risks with AI agents that quickly expose inconsistencies.
