Canadian AI startup Cohere, recently merged with Aleph Alpha, unveiled Command A+, an advanced 218-billion-parameter sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) language model designed for complex reasoning, multimodal processing, and autonomous workflows. Notably, Cohere released Command A+ under the Apache 2.0 license on Hugging Face, marking its first fully open-source, commercially usable model, encouraging sovereign AI use by enterprises.
The model activates only 25 billion parameters at a time, enhancing efficiency compared to much larger models. Command A+ also features cutting-edge lossless 4-bit quantization for improved hardware efficiency, enabling it to run on much less powerful GPUs while delivering faster generation speeds. Its optimized tokenizer reduces token count for Arabic, Japanese, and Korean, lowering costs for multilingual deployments.
Command A+ excels in complex tasks, such as reasoning and math, with increased benchmark scores and supports agentic workflows by integrating with APIs and databases. Critically, it offers native citation generation—linking facts directly to their sources—ideal for regulated industries.
With full multimodal input capabilities and an extensive context window, it supports deep document analysis. The Apache 2.0 license empowers companies to fully control and customize deployment without reliance on Cohere’s infrastructure, driving broader AI adoption with privacy and cost control benefits.
