Rob Dobi’s research explores the rising role of Chief Purpose Officers (CPOs) in companies aiming to embed purpose deeply into their strategy and culture. By interviewing 56 CPOs from diverse industries, the study identifies four distinct leadership archetypes: Visionary, Activist, Architect, and PR Strategist. Each archetype approaches purpose leadership uniquely—from inspiring emotional connection and challenging organizational norms to embedding purpose in systems and crafting narratives. The research highlights that companies must align their choice of CPO with their current purpose maturity and objectives, whether it’s cultural renewal, confronting ethical challenges, institutionalizing purpose, or communicating it externally. Key activities for all CPOs include linking purpose to strategy, sharing responsibility across the organization, embedding purpose in governance, and emotionally connecting people to the mission. Successfully institutionalizing purpose requires the right leadership fit and ongoing support to make purpose a tangible, operational priority rather than just a statement.
