China has successfully launched the first 12 satellites for its ambitious Star Compute program, aiming to build a vast orbital supercomputer satellite network. These satellites, developed by ADA Space and partners, each host an 8-billion parameter AI model capable of 744 tera operations per second, collectively achieving 5 peta operations per second. The network will ultimately consist of thousands of satellites processing data independently in orbit, communicating at up to 100Gbps via lasers, and sharing 30 terabytes of storage. Besides boosting data processing speed and efficiency, the satellites carry scientific instruments like X-ray polarization detectors and can generate 3D digital twin data for applications from emergency response to gaming. This space-based approach reduces data transmission delays and energy consumption compared to traditional methods, positioning China at the forefront of space computing technology.
