Bank of America warns customers not to share passwords with AI assistants

Bank of America has sent an email to customers warning them not to share their online banking credentials with AI-enabled tools or agents. The message, confirmed by a spokesperson, tells customers they are responsible for any activity resulting from sharing their username and password, including with AI assistants that offer to act on their behalf.

The warning comes as more customers use personal AI agents, raising the risk of unauthorised access or fraud. If an AI assistant is compromised, banking credentials could be leaked, giving hackers access to accounts. Banks are still working out how to allow AI-driven access for payments and account management while maintaining security.

Account agreements at most banks hold customers liable for any actions taken by people or services they give their log-in details to. This means customers could lose money or access if something goes wrong after sharing credentials with an AI tool. Financial firms face pressure to update their policies and educate users as AI adoption increases.
