Just hours after OpenAI upgraded GPT-5 to GPT-5.1, Baidu introduced its proprietary next-generation model, ERNIE 5.0, at Baidu World 2025. Designed as an omni-modal AI, ERNIE 5.0 processes text, images, audio, and video, targeting a global enterprise market. Unlike Baidu’s open-source ERNIE-4.5-VL-28B-A3B-Thinking, ERNIE 5.0 is accessible only through Baidu’s ERNIE Bot and the Qianfan API for enterprises. Benchmark results reveal ERNIE 5.0 outperforms or matches OpenAI’s GPT-5-High and Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro in multimodal reasoning, document understanding, and image-based question answering. It excels in visual tasks on OCRBench, DocVQA, and ChartQA benchmarks, positioning it as ideal for enterprise tasks like automated document processing and financial analysis. Baidu offers ERNIE 5.0 at a premium pricing tier, reflecting its advanced capabilities.
