Artificial Intelligence’s Energy Demand May Outpace Bitcoin by 2025

A recent analysis by Alex de Vries-Gao, a PhD candidate at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, suggests that by the end of 2025, artificial intelligence could consume nearly half of the electricity used by data centers worldwide, potentially exceeding Bitcoin mining’s energy consumption. Currently, AI accounts for up to 20% of data centers’ electricity usage. Estimations are based on projections from the supply chain of specialized AI computer chips, as precise data from tech companies is scarce. Despite advancements in efficiency, AI’s energy consumption is rapidly increasing, raising concerns about its environmental impact. The findings were published in the journal Joule and highlight the need for greater scrutiny of AI’s growing power needs.
