Apple has revealed that Sabih Khan, the current vice president of operations, will assume the role of chief operating officer (COO) later this month, succeeding Jeff Williams, who will retire at the end of this year as part of a planned succession. Williams, a key figure in the introduction of iconic products like the iPod, iPhone, and Apple Watch, has been Apple’s COO since 2015 and was viewed as a likely successor to CEO Tim Cook. Alongside Khan, other leadership candidates include hardware chief John Ternus and software chief Craig Federighi. Williams will continue to manage Apple’s design and health initiatives until his retirement, after which the design team will report directly to CEO Tim Cook. Khan, with 30 years at Apple, has led the company’s global supply chain during challenging times, including trade tensions between the US and China. Williams expressed gratitude for his tenure and looks forward to spending more time with family post-retirement.
