Anthropic is developing artificial intelligence systems about twice as quickly as a year ago, according to an analysis by the Model Evaluation and Threat Research (METR) group. The review involved access to Anthropic’s internal data and staff interviews as the company prepares for a Wall Street debut, Fast Company reports.
The findings come as CEO Dario Amodei has publicly called for a slower pace in AI progress so safety measures can keep up. The report’s significance lies in the fact that most information about AI risks has so far come from the companies themselves, with US authorities encouraging self-regulation. This raises questions for regulated sectors about oversight and risk management as AI development speeds up.
