Amazon has responded to a Reuters story questioning the visibility and user base of its Alexa Plus AI, calling the claim that Alexa Plus is unavailable to customers false. According to Amazon spokesperson Eric Sveum, hundreds of thousands of customers have access to Alexa Plus, and Amazon is continuously inviting more users who requested early access. Alexa Plus, announced in February, is a generative AI-enhanced version of Alexa available free to Amazon Prime subscribers or for $19.99 monthly otherwise. Despite an extensive search, Reuters was unable to find concrete evidence of real-world users of Alexa Plus, citing difficulty in locating firsthand accounts online. Amazon started rolling out early access in late March and is prioritizing certain Echo Show device owners. Some features like ordering takeout or identifying family members are still being developed, and accessibility on browsers, Fire TV, and Amazon tablets is forthcoming.
