AI Services and Robotics Spark Surge in May’s Diverse Unicorns as SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI Gear for Major IPOs

In May, 29 companies joined The Crunchbase Unicorn Board, spotlighting firms that make AI practical for businesses over those merely developing new AI models. OpenAI and Anthropic unveiled multi-billion-dollar AI deployment ventures, while many startups in AI infrastructure, autonomous software, and robotics also hit unicorn status. These newcomers show investors’ growing interest in applying AI innovations in real-world scenarios and combining software with robotics. Beyond AI, unicorns emerged in healthcare, quantum computing, aerospace, finance, manufacturing, e-commerce, and energy. China leads in robotics, Canada dominates quantum, and Brazil welcomed its first legaltech unicorn. The new entries hail from the US, China, UK, Canada, India, and Brazil. The Unicorn Board’s total valuation reached $9.9 trillion in May, with Anthropic surpassing OpenAI as the second most valuable private company. Both companies recently filed for IPOs, while SpaceX, expected to have the largest IPO of all time, prepares to go public, impacting the board’s valuation. New unicorns of note include OpenAI Deployment, Anthropic Applied AI JV, and robotics leaders like Hark, as well as companies across healthcare, quantum, aerospace, financial services, manufacturing, e-commerce, and more supporting AI and automation’s expanding influence.
